Last year, the small biogas power plant with a nominal output of 1.6 MW, built on the border of Balatonszabadi, was handed over. The facility’s floor was insulated with RAVATHERM XPS. In the closed-system power plant, enough electricity for about 2,500 households is produced for one year from barnyard manure and by-products of plant origin.
The purpose of the investment is the renewable energy utilization of the manure and plant-derived and food industry by-products produced on the livestock farms in the area. Ádám Ragoncza, the contractor Nawaro Ltd. its managing director said that they use Hungarian-developed technology, which has the advantage over many biogas power plants that it is also suitable for processing animal manure. The plant produces 5.2 million m3 of biogas annually from raw materials in a completely closed system, which is used in a small gas engine power plant to produce electricity and thermal energy. From biogas, the gas-powered small power plant produces nearly 10.3 GWh of green electricity annually, and approximately 9.7 GWh of thermal energy is also generated. The solid and liquid final product produced during operation is used as biofertilizer in agricultural areas, replacing the use of artificial fertilizers. The investment will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10,033 tons per year.
It is a particular pleasure for us that year after year our RAVATHERM XPS thermal insulation is used in the investments of buildings whose implementation is already done in the name of energy saving (we are thinking here of LEED “Gold” certified green office buildings, low operating energy stadiums, AA+ rated residential parks, residential properties), the small biogas power plant in Balatonszabadi also contributes to the reduction of negative environmental effects in its operation.
On the occasion of such a large investment, special attention must be paid to the thermal insulation of the floor, because it is affected by completely different effects than in the case of a residential property. Since the work in the biogas plant still falls into the category of buildings with temperatures required for their intended use, the thermal insulation is not affected by extreme heat loads, as in the case of a cold store, for example – although it is fully capable of withstanding this – but mechanical loads are even more so. In addition to your building, the weight of the equipment and machines must also be maintained by the thermal insulation without compression, even for decades. That is why 100 m3 of 5-centimeter-thick RAVATHERM XPS 300 SL closed-cell polystyrene thermal insulation with a compressive strength of 300 kPa was built into the floor of the power plant. In addition to its high load capacity, the product has a high thermal insulation value, which it also preserves in the long term, thus making it suitable for the thermal insulation of the Balatonszabadi biogas power plant and similar buildings.
