The frost endangers numerous facilities outside the buildings. Since such structures can not be built, in many cases, below the depth of frost penetration, they must be protected by covering them with some thermal insulating material which sustains its efficiency also below the frost-line and, in the meantime, is capable of enduring the environmental load without risking its integrity.
In case of every structure, building or facility built upon soil, completion of earth-works and construction of the substructure of proper quality is an indispensable task.
Insulation for uniform unheated structures. The foundations, substructure and floors of unheated structures can be at risk of frost heave if the base layer is not kept frost free. The most effective way of reducing the risk of damage from frost heave is to insulate the ground beneath the structure and adjacent to it.
The insulation must be thick enough to prevent the temperature in the sub-soil sensitive to freezing drop below 0ºC. It must also prevent the layer between the insulation and the subsoil freezing.
Within the order of layers, it is important to establish a min. 0.1m thick drainage layer beneath the insulation.
