Do you need thermal insulation on the outside of the walls? Does the foundation of the building also need to be insulated? Do we really need more thermal insulation in front of reinforced concrete structures if at least 15 cm is everywhere? The answer is simple. Yes. Today’s regulations and the soon-to-be-implemented next level require adequate thermal protection of all building structures.

XPS in THR (Total Thermal Insulation System)
It must be realized that single-layer wall structures have reached the limit of their technically and economically realistic performance. It is now clear that flawless masonry in terms of support structure, thermal inertia and acoustics can only be achieved with a suitable square meter of wall mass. Both energetically and acoustically, for the sake of sufficient air sound insulation, it is desirable that a boundary wall has a mass of at least 400-450 kg per square meter. The masonry elements in today’s domestic supply that can achieve a U-value below 0.24 W/m2K with a single-layer wall do not even reach 300 kg per square meter. That is, if we want to meet everything, we have to think about layered wall structures.

In order for the surface of the walls and external boundary structures to have the same thermal insulation performance, additional thermal insulation of the support structures that offer weaker thermal protection is essential. That is why it is necessary to install more thermal insulation in front of the wreaths and reinforced concrete pillars. RAVATHERM XPS 300 WB is excellent for this, and can be placed as a formwork that remains before concreting. Since the closed-cell polystyrene thermal insulation is not sensitive to moisture and does not absorb water, it does not change the water-cement ratio of the concrete during concreting, guaranteeing its constant quality in the entire cross-section. Depending on the place of application, it is usually used in thicknesses of 5-8-10 and 12 cm.

The thermal insulation of the building foundation is equally important. If we use clothing as an example, in winter our feet would be quite cold without socks. At the height of the edge of the floor, without thermal insulation, there would be significant heat loss, not to mention the risk of condensation and subsequent mold formation. In such places with increased exposure to moisture or surface load, such as e.g. XPS is required under glued covering or on plinths. The adhesive of the facade thermal insulation system adheres perfectly to the roughened surface of RAVATHERM XPS, and mesh embedding is also easy to implement. The final surface finish can be varied, anything from thin plinth plaster to 2-3 cm thick stone cladding is possible.
Recommended thermal insulation thicknesses in this zone are from 14 cm upwards. 20 cm would be optimal.
