The handover of the Budapest Multifunctional Arena is due in mid-December. This will be the main venue of the 2022 Hungarian-Slovakian Men’s Handball European Championship.
The construction of the arena, which can accommodate up to 20,000 people, is carried out by Market Építő Ltd. The complex is located in the area behind the Budapest bus station, between Gyáli and Üllői Street.
Within the framework of the European Championships, 65 matches will be played in the 24-team continental tournament between 13 and 30 January in Szeged, Debrecen, Kassa and Bratislava, and last but not least in Budapest. The dimensions of the complex are well reflected in the following data: the area affected by the construction is 150,000 m2 and the floor area of the hall is 50,000 m2.
A total of 4,800 tons of steel was used for the roof structure of the building. The ammount of prefabricated reinforced concrete structures is 15,000 m3, and the monolithic reinforced concrete structures together with the foundation are 45,000 m3. 1800 m3 of RAVATHERM XPS closed-cell polystyrene foam was installed on the floor of the hall, and on the other plinth structures hundreds more.
The building has 14 elevators, 8 escalators, 49 VIP boxes and its highest point is 40.5 m. Exterior lights are provided by 2,800 luminaires, a 3,300-meter LED strip and a 700-square-meter projector. The special feature of the hall is that it has the right standards, sizes and designs for almost all kinds of existing indoor sports. As a result, an extremely special floor structure had to be developed, which was suitable for the construction of several sports fields, even ice rinks, and this required special thermal insulation material. This is why the 120 mm thick RAVATHERM XPS 500 SL extruded polystyrene foam was placed under the floor structure, which was not only a good choice due to its long-lasting good thermal insulation capacity, but also its resistance to various loads due to its exceptionally high long-term strength.
Thanks to its special design, the hall will be able to host basketball, volleyball, hockey and tennis matches, skating events, as well as certain equestrian and motorcycle competitions, and may even host exhibitions and big concerts. In the name of energy compliance, an additional RAVATHERM XPS 300 SL closed-cell polystyrene foam of more than 1000 m3 has been added to heavier structures, such as the plinth sections of the building and the flat roof.
When the finishing works (such as basic mechanical and electrical installations, locksmith structures, surface formations, and technological installations), are completed, the 22,022-person complex will be fully operational for the January EC.
