The “Dagály” (High Tide) Swimming Arena was built in record time, with landscaping underway to be fully completed for the World Aquatics Championships in July. But let’s not look so far ahead, before seeing why it is important to insulate the roof of a building of this calibre and how it all happens.
The central building of the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest has already been taken over by our swimming champions. The complex, now called the Duna Arena, was completed by the end of February and the landscaping surrounding it is currently underway to show its best face to the competitors and visitors expected for the World Cup.
The building is the largest sports investment currently running in Hungary, with 15 swimming pools of concrete, and as much steel as in 1 Liberty Bridge and 2 Chain Bridges already installed. It has a floor area of 28,000 square meters and is 50 meters high – the same height as 10 10-storey residential buildings. During the construction of the foundation, 120,000 cubic meters of soil were moved, and the building is supported by circa 2,400 piles drilled to a depth of 13 meters, each weighing 16 tons. The Swimming Arena consists of two facilities, one base building with a capacity of approx. 6,000 people and a temporary facility built for the 2017 FINA World Championships.
The construction was determined by environmental awareness and sustainability, most of the buildings will be demolished after the Olympics and the building materials will be recycled. RAVATHERM XPS 300 SL closed cell polystyrene foam thermal insulation was added in 2 layers to the reinforced concrete slab of the main building of the Danube Arena, as well as the external thermal insulation of the underground part of the building and the design of the indoor pools. With a compressive strength of 300 kPa, the RAVATHERM XPS, in addition to its excellent thermal insulation properties, withstands high stress for several generations, withstands moisture, provides mechanical protection and also protects the waterproofing against the scorching rays of the sun.
The slab above the entrance reception hall is also the entrance terrace of the level above it, and therefore exposed to heavy public traffic and stress. Since there is a heated space under the terrace, it was necessary to ensure adequate heat protection according to the regulations. Here, too, the designers chose the inverted flat roof design, because this layer order ensures that such complex roofs work properly.
The heat storage capacity of the sloping reinforced concrete slab structure is large, the waterproofing that comes above it, (built on the warm side), does not cause condensation problems in the structure. Thermal insulation ensures sufficient thermal conductivity resistance – 6.80 m2K/W for 24 cm RAVATHERM XPS, which is sufficient to achieve a U-value below 0.14 W/m2K in the middle without taking into account the linear thermal bridges – and also provides mechanical protection for waterproofing.
During the installation, the constructors expertly installed the water-deflecting membrane, which is recommended for two layers of thermal insulation, between the thermal insulation and the grit ballast of the concrete surface. The capacity of the thermal insulation is sufficient to allow the machines used for the maintenance of the terrace to move freely on the surface, i.e. neither the sweeping nor the removal of winter snow is a problem for the building operator.
We are pleased that with our RAVATHERM XPS products we have been able to contribute to the creation of the thermal envelope of the building, which is the main venue of the World Swimming Championships, and an environmentally friendly building complex at the same time.
